Maybe It's Just Me . . .
Part of me wants to congratulate cirtholien for his/her winning of this month's new Live Journal header. It's attractively composed (though the colour does remind me more of Insane Journal than Live Journal), and it's always nice when anyone gains recognition.

But, when I first saw it, something about the imagery bothered me. Something I couldn't quite place my finger on until I read cirtholien's profile. It would seem I wasn't mistaken, the image does give off a rather heavy Christian vibe. Maybe, for me, it wouldn't have seemed so heavy-handed had the image run during Lent or Holy Week/Easter, but I find it off-putting that an ostensibly secular service like Live Journal would be running a Christian-themed image.

And no, I'm not being anti-Christian, I'd be just as offput had the imagery been seeming to celebrate Wicca/New Age/Paganism, Judaism, Islam, Catholicism, Mormonism, or any other religious faith. I don't think I'd have had the same reaction had LJ run that "Coexistence" bumper sticker that attempts to be inclusive off all faiths (or none).

With reactionary conservative religions on the rise throughout the world, I'd have much preferred an image as welcoming to all faiths as it is to none.

Does anyone know of a way to hide this particular image? As a person who maintains their own spirituality, I find the decidedly pro-Christian theme somewhat offensive.

Hm. I read your post before looking at the image, and I didn't get a Christian vibe from it - more of a summer one. (And, ftr, I am a Christian.) I can, however, see how folks with other religious/spiritual viewpoints might view it.

For me, it won't be much of an issue; the only time I'll see it is when I access my profile or messages (which isn't often). I wish I knew how to tell you to block it.

I don't even know where I'd find this contentious header. A clue? A link? I still have the normal one with the pencil on my userinfo pages.

As I said, it could just be me, and the way I'm viewing the header.

The header is the new orange banner that goes across the top of the page (for example, if you're on your own profile page).

The immediate vibe it gave me was of Michelangelo's rendition of God or man reaching out for the other's existence. In this case, it seems like two hands reaching heavenward in supplication to their creator.

At this point, you can see it while not logged in on the main LJ page (although the second hand is covered by the log in).

I doubt it would have bothered me quite so much had the image appeared during Lent or around Easter. The importance of those holidays to so many people would have made me far more accepting of it. But at this point, it just seems the wrong time of the year for such an image having such a subtext.

Wow, I haven't got it! I have the pencil and the multicoloured bitsy bit and a plain orange bar beneath. I am using a fairly old LJ template though. I wonder if that is why?

Sorry, it took me a while to remember how to take screen captures; I don't do it very often. This is what the image looks like:

Hands in Supplication

As I said, it could just be me that's seeing a religious theme where there isn't one. But it does, to me, look like hands raised in praise of the Creator.

Yes, it does look a bit holy.
