Fan Fiction: Time and Distance
This year's Media*West was pleasant enough, and I had a fun time catching up with old friends and making a few new ones. But I was left with the uncomfortable feeling that active fandom participation and I had reached an impasse in our relationship. It's not the first time this has happened; it probably won't be the last. But I think some distance is starting to be necessary.

  • When did the default for slash become sex?

  • When did the default for adult themes and mature content become sex?

  • When did the default for sex become erotica?

  • When did the default for erotica become porn?

  • When did the default for porn become kink?

  • When did the default for kink become anything goes?

  • When did the default for anything goes become push the envelope 'til it rips to shreds?

  • When did the majority female audience of fanfic readers start hating both female canon characters and female original characters?

  • When did all original female characters become Mary Sues?

  • When did honest discussion and critique of fanfic get presumed to be a hate-on for the author?

  • When did adolescent viciousness replace justifiable anger?

  • When did the fannish sandbox become the fandom litterbox?
